A comprehensive diagnostic evaluation involves a thorough assessment of a child's developmental history, cognitive functioning, social interactions, and communication skills. This process also provides parents with a clearer understanding of their child's unique needs and strengths. It can also serve as a crucial step in connecting families with essential community resources and therapeutic support, empowering them to make informed decisions for their child's success.
A psychoeducational evaluation for children exhibiting signs of learning difficulties entails a comprehensive assessment of cognitive abilities, academic performance, and behavioral patterns. This type of evaluation will also seek to determine if your child is autistic, living with ADHD, has a specific learning disorder, or struggles with mood. This provides an accurate understanding of the child's specific profile so that an individualized plan can be created to help them succeed.
Given the 2020 pandemic, we are now able to accurately diagnose ADHD and ASD via Telehealth. This often includes multiple clinical interviews with caregivers and the young individual if appropriate. Data is also gathered via rating scales often completed by caregivers and teachers. Therefore, this process allows for a seamless and accessible option to those who are in need of a succinct evaluation to better understand their child. Currently available in FL and active PSYPACT states.
Children who are eligible for gifted placement require an assessment of their IQ to determine if they meet the required cutoff score. This evaluation is offered to complete the necessary paperwork requested by the school and is conducted during a one-hour appointment with the child. No intake is necessary and appointment can be immediately scheduled based on availability.
During this one-hour session, I gather as much information possible about the child's history of presenting problems and current functioning within various settings. This is a time where I begin to connect with parents in better understanding their concerns and see their child through their eyes.
Various rating scales are provided to parents
AND teachers as a way of gaining better insights on specific social, emotional, and behavioral patterns within the home and school settings. These forms are standardized measures that provide qualitative data into the child's abilities from the perspective of various raters.
The testing day is an eventful one in which the child is completing a series of standardized assessments with the clinician that are designed to determine their patterns of strengths and challenges across cognitive, academic, social, and behavioral domains. Each testing battery is tailored to fit the needs of the family.
Two appointment options are available:
Full Day testing session
Days typically begin at 9am and end around 2:30 with plenty of breaks and time for lunch to reduce mental fatigue.
Multi-Day testing sessions
For some children, going through a full day of testing can be too much even with breaks. Therefore, I offer to break up the testing into two appointments lasting about 2 hours each.
If the clinician determines that additional testing is needed in order to complete the evaluation process, then this will be scheduled on a 1 - 2 hour basis as needed at no additional cost.
The structure is similar with an intake and rating scales, but the remainder of the data is gathered through clinical interviews with parent/caregivers and older children, teens, and young adults if appropriate. These interviews are done with standardized questionnaires/tools designed to gather the information needed for a diagnosis. Typical appointments are between 1.5 - 2 hours and usually require 1 - 2 sessions to complete (in addition to the intake and feedback sessions)
Once all data from the testing day and rating scales have been obtained, time is spent diligently scoring and interpreting the results. These results are then used to compile a thorough report that includes a list of recommendations and resources.
This last appointment is offered on an as needed basis. For more complex cases involving initial diagnoses and specific learning disorders, parents are strongly encouraged to schedule the feedback appointment with Dr. Kat directly for a thorough understanding of their child's needs.
