A psychoeducational evaluation for youth who exhibit signs of learning difficulties entails a comprehensive assessment of cognitive abilities, academic performance, and behavioral patterns. This type of evaluation will also seek to determine if your child is autistic, living with ADHD, or has a specific learning disorder. This provides an accurate understanding of the child's specific profile so that an individualized plan can be created to help them succeed.
Given the 2020 pandemic, we are now able to accurately diagnose ADHD and ASD via Telehealth. This often includes clinical interviews with the individual and sometimes with a parent/caregiver. Data is also gathered via rating scales often completed by the individual, their caregiver, and sometimes their teacher. Therefore, this process allows for a seamless and accessible option to those who are in need of a brief evaluation to better understand themselves.
During this one-hour session, I gather as much information possible about the child's history of presenting problems, traits, behaviors, and current functioning within various settings. This is a time where I begin to connect with the individual and understand their experiences from their perspective. I also like to learn about areas of strength, hobbies of interest, and coping skills.
For individuals ages 13 - 17, it is important that they provide as much information about their experiences thus far when completing the intake form and appointment. Parents/caregivers will have an opportunity to provide input about the youth's behaviors/experiences later in the process. Teens must be fully aware for the reason of testing, must be present during the intake session, will have the option to include parent (or not) during the appointment, and must provide assent to continue treatment.
Various rating scales are often provided to the teen, parents
and sometimes teachers as a way of gaining better insights on specific social, emotional, and behavioral patterns within the home and school settings. These forms are standardized measures that provide qualitative data into the child's abilities from the perspective of various raters.
For youth ages 13 - 17, they must have a valid and accessible email account to which the rating scales and final report can be sent. This is in line with WA state laws and regulations regarding privacy and disclosures. Parents may assist the youth in establishing a free email account.
The testing day is an eventful one in which the child/teen is completing a series of standardized assessments with the clinician that are designed to determine their patterns of strengths and challenges across cognitive, social, emotional, and behavioral domains. Each testing battery is tailored to fit the needs of the individual.
Assessment days are scheduled as two-hour appointments. For those seeking an ASD/ADHD only assessment, testing is typically done in one session. However, additional sessions are required for those seeking to determine if they meet criteria for a specific learning disorder.
Once all the data from the testing day and rating scales have been obtained, time is spent diligently scoring and interpreting the results. These results are then used to compile a thorough report that includes a list of recommendations and resources.
This last appointment is offered on an as needed basis. For more complex cases involving initial diagnoses and specific learning disorders, parents are strongly encouraged to schedule the feedback appointment with Dr. Kat directly for a thorough understanding of their child's needs.
